SanDisk Unveils Prototype 1TB USB-C Stick
LAS VEGAS—Perhaps yous're a MacBook possessor who wishes she opted for more than the 256GB of storage in the base model. Or maybe you've got an Android phone with a USB-C connector and support for USB On-The-Go, and you're itching to free up some space on your phone. These are just a few uses for SanDisk's new epitome 1TB USB-C stick, which the company unveiled at CES here on Mon.
USB-C is the way of the time to come, and some ultraportables like the MacBook accept ditched all other ports in favor of it, and then information technology's only a matter of fourth dimension before it becomes the standard for stick drives, too. With a 1TB capacity, the SanDisk prototype is proof of what'southward possible: a tiny stick that has a much bigger capacity than the ubiquitous 256GB external SSDs that are many times its physical size.
Of course, the main downside of a USB stick, whether it's got a conventional USB connector or USB-C, is that data will transfer more slowly than information technology would if you're using a larger external bulldoze. So while the 1TB prototype might never go into production, SanDisk as well announced a larger (but however diminutive) Extreme Portable SSD. It's available now and comes in several different capacities: 250GB for $129.99, 500GB for $199.99, or 1TB for $399.99.
Offering up to 550MBps read speeds, the SSD is also ruggedized and water resistant, making it a good option whether you're using information technology to offload scientific data in the field or a motion-picture show pupil who'south pulling it in and out of your purse. Actually, forget the purse: This bulldoze is smaller than a smartphone, and a bit less bulky than its predecessor so information technology can easily fit in your pocket.
For professional photographers, SanDisk's parent company Western Digital also announced a revamped My Passport Wireless SSD, which is available in capacities upwards to 2TB and has a built-in battery to charge mobile devices. New this year is app back up for Filmic Pro and LumaFusion, which lets photographers edit raw photos directly from the bulldoze with no PC required via an 802.11ac Wi-Fi connection.
In improver to the 2TB version for $799, the My Passport Wireless SSD is also available with 250GB for $249, 500GB for $299, or 1TB for $449.
